Sometimes all menus open completely blank, both objects in menu bar (file, edit, etc) and right click menus. Only fix is to use task manager to close Firefox and restart. I'm running 3.6.12 but this also happened in previous versions.
Just closing FF won't kill the process. Only task manager will do that. The menus have been an ongoing problem but it's got a lot worse the last few days. I haven't added any new plugins recently.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
- Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
