I am unfamiliar with Linux. I want to upgrade my little daughter's eee PC, because Firefox is very outdated. I spent a whole day downloading all sorts of stuff (gtk+2.10, Asus1-files.deb, etc.) and have been typing all the advised commands exactly. Whatever the source (Softpedia, Mozilla, Ubuntu, wiki.eeeuser, 3eportal), nothing gets it done. Is there anyone on this planet that can help a desperate father out? Is there a logical way to upgrade without typing hours of code?

This happened

Not sure how often

IMO, you're better off installing a more modern Linux distro, to get rid of that ancient version of Xandros supplied with the Asus EeePC.

I did the "updates" that were recommended by the eeeuser forum, and found my EeePC 900 slow as a slug with Firefox 3.0 and then another upgrade to 3.6 that I did a few weeks later. After another few weeks of trying to fix it, I gave up and installed the EasyPeasy version of Ububtu Netbook Remix and my EeePC works a lot faster than it ever did with Xandros /Asus and Firefox 2.0.0.14.

This is an easy fix, since I f9 refresh this awesome machine so often I've got a real easy way to do this:

Use the Update Manager to go to Firefox 3.04. Be sure to install any system updates, the java update, and the hotfix first. Do these by order of dates, and restart if it tells you to....one update at a time too. Now, once you're at 3.04 (help, about), shut down any open firefoxes, and open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) and type:

sudo firefox &

This opens a super-user (admin) firefox session (gives you 'rights') Now, go to Help, Check Updates, and click the Install button. This will get you to 3.0.19. Restart computer when upgrade is done. Do the sudo firefox terminal thing one, maybe two, more times and it will update you to the latest version. That is it! BTW, I have used Ubuntu, Mint, and EeeBuntu, and the default Linux this eee pc 900 came with is my favorite. Stable, everything works, and I can't break anything.

P.S. It won't work to do the help, update within firefox starting from 2.0. My guess is too many system files need to be updated, hence the need to go to 3.0.4 in update manager first.

P.S.S. Cheers to all you smart people that stick with what works. Don't upgrade a working system, life is too short.
