I am using a university email system hosted by google, servers are imap.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com using university credentials, which involve 2-factor authentication using Duo. It has worked fine for several years, but last night we had a power failure that outlasted my UPS. When I started up Thunderbird this morning, I could not access the account, every attempt threw up a dialog from the University saying "Web Login Service - Stale Request". Clearing cookies and cache was not helpful. I deleted the account, shut down Thunderbird, restarted Thunderbird, and re-created the account. Now I can receive mail, but I still get the same error when I try to send mail. The account works through the gmail browser app, but I find that app to be worse than useless. I have no idea what to try next. Thanks for any help/suggestions.

You deleted the account, but did you delete the SMTP server entry in outgoing servers (SMTP).

I suggest you ask, or try for yourself using oauth authentication. It is googles preferred method and does not use what I consider a PITA text message to my phone. Once set up, the setting never needs to be renewed. Or at least not yet for me.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that did not help. In fact, it's very strange. I have three gmail accounts, one @gmail.com, one through the university, and one through a nonprofit .org. The university account is where the problem is, so after deleting smtp.gmail.com and creating a dummy default, I quit Thunderbird and re-started it. Then I added smtp.gmail.com as a server, oauth authentication. When it asked for my username, I tried my @gmail.com account, but that was rejected. No message, it just refreshed the dialog with a blank username field. Then I tried my .org account, same behavior. Finally I tried my .edu account, and got the stale request error again. Whatever that stale request is must be in a cache somewhere I haven't found.

Wondering if a solution was ever found? I have a similar scenario - 3 gmail accounts, with 1 university account, and the problem began when forced to change my university pass phrase. Now I only get "stale request" affecting just the university email (send or receive). However, as I tried to clear caches and cookies and saved Oauth routines, other accounts also ruined.

This issue was solved by clearing browser & Thunderbird cache and cookies, Thunderbird SMTP & Oauth2 certificates, and by allowing cookies in Thunderbird. Our IT says that this is new behavior not seen in earlier releases of tbird. Hopefully someone @ Mozilla will read this and prevent the trouble this causes in the future.
