Is there a way in Thunderbird to retain grouping? I found the Grouped by Sort under View -> Sort By However, if I change the sort criterion the grouping disappears and the settings revert to ascending when I had set them to descending. Is there a way to stop it going back to default?

Sorting on the list headers tend to mess up "group by" sorting. You have to do that in the menu for it to be consistent.
