Which is it? Thunderbird or Firefox. Thunderbird is an email client and Firefox is a browser.
In Thunderbird there is a small icon in the lower left corner that looks like 2 monitors. This is the Online/Offline indicator. A red x appears if Thunderbird is offline. Hovering the mouse over it displays a dialog stating online or offline. Clicking the icon changes state.
