Even though the "play sound" option is ticked off in my preferences, I get a sound when a new message arrives. I want to turn it off!!!! How do I do that?

Most complains like this come from Apple users and they find some utility in the MAC software doing it. If you have turned notifications off in Thunderbird they are off and Thunderbird is not playing the sound.

Go to your *MAC* 'system preferences' | notifications tab | scroll down to Thunderbird and turn off alerts.
