Recently compacted my e-mail (accidently) 0f 800 e-mails in trash only 30 remain. I need them back. Any hope. Note I did not delete them, I use them for ref.
I write a lot of reference papers and letters to the editor. I inadvertently clicked on the compact button, first time in all the years I've used Thunderbird. I didn't notice anything right away, but I went to my trash folder and they are all gone, except for about 30, all of which are no more then 2 or 3 days old. Checked the recycle bin...............nuttin. Any hope of retrieval? desperate. portorangejim

I see a few problems. First Compacting folders is a normal operation for Thunderbird and if you have not done it in years it is no wonder you lost messages. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Thunderbird_:_Tips_:_Compacting_Folders
Second I never understand why people place messages that they want to keep in the Trash.
Make folders under Local Folder and move your "keeper" messages into those folders.
This link is good reading. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_(Thunderbird)
In addition to what Airmail said: Backup your Thunderbird profile if there is stuff you cannot afford to lose. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_backing-up-a-profile
