Thunderbird 78 vs Ubuntu 20.04

Thunderbird v78 is buggy under Ubuntu 20.04 but works under 18.04. 

    I've upgraded my (two - v6 and v7) Lenovo x1 laptops to 20.04 and cannot send emails.  Yes, I tried the recommended fix.  But my wife is still running 18.04 on her Lenovo x1 v3 and having no problems.  This seems odd, and I refer this puzzle to the more knowledgeable.
    Meanwhile, I still can't send emails using  v78.11.   And of course my address book is history.
