A few days ago when I opened Thunderbird, version 70 downloaded (it's not supposed to appear here in the UK yet), overriding the 68 that was installed and disappearing the files. I tried to re-install, downloaded 68, but could not make the installation work. The help line of Plusnet (my service provider) all gone. I tried to re-install was consulted on two days and told me the values I should put in for manual installation, but , although I tried all the variations, I still could not make it work. I'd be very grateful for advice.

What TB version you have now installed? At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button (or use the regular menu at the top), then select Help: Troubleshooting Information -> on that page you should see that information.

Ever since the begining of version 68, Thunderbird has been working on a profile per installation. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/dedicated-profile-thunderbird-installation#w_what-happens-to-my-profile-if-i-downgrade-to-a-previous-version-of-thunderbird

re : version 70 downloaded - I presume you mean 78. That is odd, I'm running a 68 and it just updated to 68.12.1 on the 6th Oct. So the 68 series is not updating to 78 as far as I'm aware.

Do you have Updater Software on your computer that updated Thunderbird because that would update to a 78 version?

After uninstalling 78 and getting a download from here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.12.1/ choose OS choose language Download the .exe file Install but do not start Thunderbird. start Thunderbird from the command line : In Windows search type : run choose the 'Run app' Type: thunderbird.exe -P --allow-downgrade click on OK Profile Manager opens select the Profile name you used and click on 'Start Thunderbird'.

Make sure Thunderbird is not set to auto update, choose the ask me option.
