How can I completely remove the add-on/extension GreatArcadeHits that sneaked in when I tried to download something from Cnet.

more options

Firefox automatically disabled it, which is fine as I never wanted it. Now I want it completely cleared out of my computer. It was one of a load of garbage that installed while the program I did want failed to install. I've read all the questions and posts about the same issue with TopArcadeHits (which I guess is the same thing with an older name), which sneaked in through a site other than Cnet. Anyway, I couldn't understand much of what was replied with regard to TopArcadeHits and was scared to go directly to its own (GreatArcadeHits) website as some people suggested. I'm not a all technically sophisticated or comfortable. I'm in need of Instruction for Idiots and hope so much that someone will be kind and patient in replying. Thank you. I use Firefox in Windows 7

Hi,

In order to uninstall a possibly unwanted extension, please do the following:

  1. From the Firefox window click the Firefox button at the top left and select Add-ons, or, if the Firefox button is not shown, click the Tools menu and click Add-ons.
  2. Once the Add-on Manager has opened in a new tab, click the Extensions button on the left side of the window.
  3. You should now see a list of your installed extensions on the right side together with buttons on the right side of each extension.
  4. To remove an extension from Firefox, simply click the Remove button. You should see a message that informs you about the successful removal of the add-on.
  5. Note that some add-ons require a Firefox restart to be removed completely. To perform a Firefox restart after the add-on removal, click the Restart now link in the message.

You can find further information about uninstalling extensions in the following articles:

Hope this helps!

Thank you, Curtis, but the problems go beyond this. There is no Remove button at the GreatArcadeHits listing on the extensions list. I tried to remove manually, but that didn't work. I'll explain as fully as I'm able here and hope you don't run away. I wonder if it's possible to speak with a Firefox expert who can walk me through things.

When GreatArcadeHits garbage was installed, so were a bunch of other things which appear in various places (e.g., Control Panel, as a toolbar, in the Firefox Troubleshooting Information list, and other places it seems). Each of them is in at least one place. Supposedly I uninstalled a couple of them, but I don't really believe it -- I get messages that others were successfully uninstalled, but there they are again!.

One of them has taken over my main tab (which is my verizon webmail) and something called JollyWallet (coupons & whatever junk) has taken up residence as a toolbar.

"Connect DLC 5 Community Toolbar including Value Apps for Firefox [and Chrome, I think I saw] and SearchProtect by Conduit" seems to be a major-player problem which won't be uninstalled from Control Panel. (I uninstalled Chrome which I never used anyway, but that seems to have solved nothing.)

I was about to do Restart Firefox to go back to its default form, but remembered another difficulty I want to solve. Instead of regular Firefox, I have Firefox 25 adapted to Yahoo. In the last update to version 25, the Yahoo name and search bar became plastered across the top of my screen. How many search bars do I need, I should like to know? I want to uninstall this oddball Firefox and install from Mozilla, but am timid about it because of not knowing what I may lose in the process.

So I need to find out in what order all of the above should be done for safety and efficiency.

When you are in the Windows 7 Programs and Features Control Panel, you can sort the list by the install date to get a sense of everything that got installed together so it's easier to remove.

It is very sad  :-< but many of the software down-loaders / installers will trick you into installing not only their program, but other programs as well. You have heard of the fine print in shady contracts, right? Well, some installers you need to look at the teeny tiny fine print. You are thinking you are giving the program permission to instal the program you want by using the recommended option. But if you use the manual option instead, you discover all kinds of stuff that you do not even know what it is or what it does. From now on, everyone needs to use the manual option to put a stop to this.

Thanks again, Curtis/Cyborg. GreatArcadeHits seems to be gone, unless it's hiding, but I'm hopeful. In the past few days several new problems and oddities have arisen on top of the original ones that linger since Saturday. I've been reading through the links you provided and have been getting help from a friend. Because of what I describe to him in each message, he's sure I still have a malware infection(s). We're going to connect this weekend via a screen-sharing website so that he can dig in. I'm tech-timid, whereas he isn't and he is knowledgeable and I have faith in him.

Thank you.

FredMcD, thank you, too. I'll take the manual installation route from here on as you recommend. It sounds like the right thing.
