Cox.net is not that great. I go through Firefox to get my Cox emails. Can I use Firefox as my email provider ( like wirukado@firefox.net) for free and still keep Cox.net until all friends know new address? Cox email forward lose formatting and all photos don't forward, fonts and colors change!!

This is the difference:

Gmail, Yahoo, cox, etc. Are email Providers. In other words they provide you an email address that you can use to send emails and receive them. they usually also provide you with storage on their servers and a website you can go to to access your email.

Thunderbird is an email Client. It simply provides you a different way to access the email that gmail, yahoo, whomever is your email provider, stores. You configure Thunderbird on your computer so then you don't have to access the website those email sites. It's really a matter of personal preference.

Some people don't like going to a website to access their email so they use something like Thunderbird, other's prefer the web based access.

So, you can try setting up an account with another service and using thunderbird to access it, but neither Firefox nor Thunderbird provides email service nor do they provide Internet service. They are simply portals used to access other people's offerings.

As I moved around the Firefox site I saw THUNDERBIRD(??) Is this an email service like Cox, Yahoo, gmail???

Now I wonder since you did not mention it. Bill

No, Thunderbird isn't like Cox webmail, Yahoo mail, or Gmail. Those services ate considered Mail Transfer Agents.

Thunderbird is an Email "client" or program.
