Updates do not work, instead clog up the rest of my programs, access to email, etc.

Every time I receive an update notification & consent to have it installed, it does not work but the notification box to "continue" or "cancel" continues to pop up and interferes with my email access by blocking my access and throwing me back to my desktop. When I do click on "continue", it again tries but then sends me a notice that it has failed and to go to the Firefox link for a manual installment. That also usually fails and I'm back to the box clogging up my access again. I'm 78, very low-tech & don't understand the language...just wish you had phone support to guide me through installation of updates or better: improved the process so it wouldn't be a hassle every time!!! This is like asking me to do my own Toyota Prius maintenance all by myself at home via the computer. I'm not going to try to fill in the rest of the blanks below.

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.

Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

  • Uninstall your current Firefox version via the Control Panel > Programs.
  • Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data in the profile folder.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

If updates cause that much trouble, I would disable them. In about:config, you can disable all app updates:

  • app.update.auto - set to false
  • app.update.enabled - set to false

You can check for new versions of Firefox from here:
