I've already looked at another question about the same issue. Half the fixes don't exist on my version of Firefox. There is no check box that I can locate, <shift>+F12 doesn't bring up any settings page as was suggested possibly do to developer tools that had been added while taking a collage class on web scripting. F12 brings up the developer tools and overrides the <shift> function. The page that does allows me to change settings simply doesn't have the option to use the search bar in the splash page instead of the address bar. No, this is not a feature I installed and I can not remove and reinstall it short of deleting and reinstalling Firefox. Which might not even fix it so I'm a little unwilling to do all that work to achieve nothing and possibly lose functionality in the process.

Do I consider this a high priority? Na, it's just really annoying. I mean, what's the point of even having that search feture if I can't use it?

The closest work around I could think of was to set a search page as my home page. And yes, I will be using a non Google search page just out of spite. So there. :P

There is a preference for this but it does take a bit of work to find it because of the unusual name:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste handoff and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar preference to switch the value from true to false

Success?

More info on about:config: Configuration Editor for Firefox.

Awesome, jscher2000! This has been bugging me for weeks now and the fix is easy. I am a compartmentalizer and having the address bar as the address bar, the optional search bar in the toolbar for searching, and the search box on the homepage functional has just taken several tiny irritations out of my life!!! Now, on to the major irritations (which don't belong on this page). :-)
