I should have answered you last week however I was busy and didn't have a chance. I believe my Firefox updated and now I don't have the issue any longer. Thank you all for the help.

Let's start with, [v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.

You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.

When done, copy and post the results here.

Doesn't the star gets highlighted when you click it to bookmark a page?

The "Edit This Bookmark" dialog that opens if you click the highlighted star has a checkbox with "Show editor when saving" (shortcut key in the dialog is Alt+S). This item is at the bottom just above "Remove Bookmark" and "Done".

Hello Johnson67,

Do you by any chance have a bookmark related extension ? If so : would you disable it and see if that will make difference ?

The star does not highlight when I click it. Nothing happens. Same with Control D.

I do not have a bookmark relate extension.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

In case errors are reported with "Verify Integrity" close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

I have this problem, too, and I don't have a bookmark extension that I am aware of. It just started within the past week or so. The star will not always turn blue when I go to bookmark a page. Works on some pages, not others. Very frustrating and I have no idea why this is occurring.

I tried to bookmark this page so I could return to see if anyone answered but I can't!

What version are you using now please? I ask because several years ago I was directed to use Firefox esr so I am on v60.7.2 of that. I can't remember why this was recommended but it could have been because of Java or Shockwave issues. Thanks.

So, is it the esr that's causing issues? I need someone who knows about that. Thanks.

It won't be because of Shockwave Flash (that's what Adobe Flash is called in Firefox => Add-ons => Plugins).

But if you needed (and still do) Java, please see :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/npapi-plugins

If you do not need Java, then please install the latest regular release Firefox version (which can be updated to version 68.0 any minute now).

Should you still have the same problem after updating (or in case you need to stay on the ESR version) : maybe you'd best start your own thread :

There are a few programs I use that might still require Java. I will have to check. Among those are a couple of coupon printers that I know relied on Java to work and possibly some of the casual game sites I use to play my brain games. If it isn't spelled out I am not sure how I could find out except to update and then go back again if things don't work correctly.

The odd thing is that the bookmarking worked until about a week or so ago so I'm not sure what changed between then and now.

Thanks

Hello Johnson67,

You marked tek650's post as Chosen Solution, while this is what solved your problem ....

Same problem for me and same solution as above. This thread helped me recall that I had just installed Flash about the same time the "bookmark star" in the address bar disappeared. Although I had the latest version of Firefox ("Firefox is up to date") I reinstalled the same version and "a star was (re)born". That little tool is a tremendous time-saver. Thanks all for sharing.

hdh That was very good work. Well done.
