I am running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Within the last 10 days, Firefox has started hanging up. It started before the last update. I hoped the latest update would solve the issue but it has not. Some times the hangups lasts for a 3 or 4 seconds, sometimes much longer and the screen turns gray and stops responding for 15 to 20 seconds. During the hangups, it responds neither to the mouse or keyboard. I have started it with add-ons disabled. I have done a refresh and nothing helps. I have used Firefox since 1.0PR in 2004 and I don't want to stop now. Chrome and Internet Explorer work fine. All other programs on my PC work fine. I have installed no new software on the PC. I have installed no new extensions in Firefox.

Additional information. It seems as if the longer Firefox is running, the slower it gets. When I first start it, it will seem to work ok then as time progresses, it gets slower and slower. It gets so slow that, and this is just one example, I cannot control a YouTube video. Navigating other websites is equally slow.

Well, Firefox just made a liar out of me. Now it's doing the exact same thing on Ubuntu. The screen just turned gray and froze. No response. 55.0.2 32bit

See if using muli-core. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/06/firefox-multiple-content-processes/ if are then check task manager and see what sort of resources they are using. Also note it can cause issues running it. If not using multi-core you may want to enable that function (as above article states some Extensions disable multi-core like Norton Toolbar until ver 57)

Windows 7 is not being Supported by MS as it should (articles have read) Some users are going to ver 54 of the Extended Release Version.

See if this helps at all : 1. Repair System Registry and Files (FOR DOING Above & Below - WINDOWS All OTHER VERSIONS - Use Search To Find Command Prompt ** Enter CMD.exe to Find COMMAND PROMPT Then Right Click & RUN AS ADMIN)

To run the SFC command use the Windows key + X keyboard shortcut to open the Power User menu and select Command Prompt (Admin). Type "SFC /SCANNOW" (without quotes or copy/paste) and press Enter. Thanks for the response! I know you put a lot of effort into this reply.

I did everything you suggested and when I got down to the DISM part, I did not know how to start and run it so I did research on how to. My research says DISM is not available on Windows 7, only Windows 8 and above?

No crash reports have been generated. Firefox does not crash, it just slows to a crawl and becomes so slow as to be unusable.

I did everything you suggested and I will monitor it for the next day or so.

Next item, Firefox on Ubuntu. I narrowed down the issue to the following: When I would select View, Bookmark Toolbar, it would freeze and gray the screen. I would shut down Firefox and try again. Same thing over and over. Then I did a Ubuntu software update check and the OS updated and Firefox now works correctly on Ubuntu.

Again, thanks very much!
