how do I stop excessive downloading when I just want one download?

My download will not let me just get one. When I want to download "a" single document , I get repeated and fast copies over and over like my computer goes into overdrive and I have to exit out of site to stop it. I cannot access the download because I have a billion copies yet none of the copies will open up...I cannot even get a bank statement to download properly.

Is this with many sites, some, a few? What sites have the problem?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>
(Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox. A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh).

Is the problem still there?

Note: "bank statement" makes me think of a PDF file. You can choose your preferred PDF viewer (in a Firefox tab) or to launch your PDFs outside Firefox, which might be safer. Please see this article for steps to work with that part of the Options page: View PDF files in Firefox or choose another viewer.
