How do I configure the type of New Tab I want to open?

more options

Mine have been hijacked by "DirectionsAce" and "FindYourMaps"! I keep having to change the Home Page setting but even then the tabs continue to open in the "FindYourMaps" format!! In fact I've found no way to designate the New Tabs layout.

Hi TheGarpster, first you need to regain control of your Firefox, and then you can set up an alternate new tab page.

Flushing The New Tab Hijackers

The most likely culprit is an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.

Any improvement?

Replacing Firefox's New Tab Page

Here are some options for add-ons that let you choose an alternate page -- it's still important to remove the current intruder since you can't be sure which extension will win if you add one of these and still have the other one:

  • If you already use either the "Classic Theme Restorer" or "Tab Mix Plus" extension: There is an option somewhere (!) in its extensive settings dialogs to select a different new tab page.

Please only use one of these methods at a time, otherwise there may be conflicts and dysfunctionality.

Setting up New Tab Override and Custom New Tab

After installing one of these extensions, you need to use its Options page to set the desired new tab page (instead of using about:config).

Open the Add-ons page using either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Cmd+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then on the right side, find New Tab Override or Custom New Tab and click its Options button. There you can enter the full URL of the page you want instead.

Success?
