Link clicked on will open new undesired spam tab 10-20% of the time?

I have a problem where from any web site, when I click on a link, about 10-20% of the time it will open a new tab and site that was not related to the link. This is only happening in firefox, not IE it seems. A fresh install of firefox didn't seem to help. Any ideas?

hi brendan, you have probably various malicious software already present on your system. so please perform all these steps:

  1. reset firefox (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
  2. afterwards go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
  3. finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.
