Constant "App Hang" non-resposive error message with Beta V38.
I am running the most current version of beta v 38, and when downloading messages, at least half the time the entire platform goes "unresponsive" with the Windows error message in Task Manager advising "app hang". As an example, this happened nearly a dozen times yesterday, and it took three computer restarts, five Thunderbird re-starts and nine attempts to download to successfully download fewer than 10 messages. Many messages were downloaded more than once (some as many as four times). When it works, it works well, but it doesn't work so much of the time.
When this happens, all operations of my computer slow to a crawl and the hard drive just spins and Windows task manager advises that CPU usage for Thunderbird is 0 percent.
I am running a Dell Vostro laptop, with i5 processor, 8 gigs of RAM, and the most current version of Windows 7 Pro. Internet service provider is Yahoo.
Please help. I am ready to get off the beta channel and move back to the standard channel if this is what I have to live with.

Steven, did you have good results with safe mode?

Given it is beta, my guess is badly behaved anti virus. They have trouble getting it right on release versions. Using daily myself I have come to hate most anti virus products.
Try Restarting the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I did not have the problem in safe mode. With that having been said, my anti-malware platform is AVG, which is broadly distributed and used by many millions of Thunderbird users around the world.
It would seem to me that it would be in the best interest of Mozilla to investigate why this is such a problem.
Interestingly, when a new Thunderbird update comes out (for example, v38 came out to replace the immediately prior version), the app hang problem doesn't occur, and it seems to me that the longer a beta app is "in the field" the worse the app hang problem gets. This seems counter-intuitive to me, as I think it should be the opposite, because if "balky" anti-virus is truly the issue, I would expect the anti-virus to have a much greater problem with something that is brand new as opposed to something that has been on my PC platform through many iterations of anti-virus updates . . .

This indicates a problem with an addon(extension) or hardware acceleration found at tools | options | advanced | general

It is understandable you might think this. But is well establiished that a) antivirus software is a common source of problems, b) that these issues tend to happen more often on Thunderbird updates (and even more on major updates), c) that it is the AV vendor's reponsibility to play nice. Look for your AV software in https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues
I've had the same issue with Thunderbird hanging constantly after Windows 10 upgrade. After a lot of troubleshooting, here is a solution that seems to have worked for me.
When Windows upgraded to version 10, the Windows Firewall was installed and activated automatically. Reviews said it was good, so I allowed it to run. As a troubleshooting step, I disabled Windows Firewall and installed Avast (free version). Since this step, I've had NO hangs in Thunderbird!
I'll add that I first downloaded beta version 40 of Thunderbird and had all kinds of problems, including graphics issues, hanging, total crashing, etc. I uninstalled v40 and clean installed v38.2.0.
My setup: - Thunderbird v38.2.0 - Use hardware acceleration (unchecked) - Allow Windows Search to search messages (unchecked) - Windows 10, Intel i7, 16GB RAM, dual monitors
