i have no idea when this started but I have asked before for some help. I think I want to delete all my current bookmarks and import a correct set from another browser and have them sync across all my devices. I have used, and prefer Firefox but it has become an irritant. I did a paint screen print to show some of what I am experiencing.

You will have to cleanup the bookmarks in Firefox to recover from this corruption.

If all the compressed .jsonlz4 backups in the bookmarkbackups folder are corrupted (i.e. restoring them shows these folders) then you may have to use an HTML backup and check this file in a text editor.

Is there any correlation between how often you exit Firefox and restart it and how many bars you have? Just wondering whether Firefox is running some kind of import step at startup. For example, there is a preference named browser.places.importBookmarksHTML that should be set to false after it imports an old bookmarks.html file a single time. If, hypothetically, that were being reset to true every time you start Firefox, it might keep re-running that process. You might make sure you don't have any old bookmarks.html file in your currently active profile folder.*

Or if Firefox is importing from IE, perhaps there is some kind of damage in the Windows Favorites folder cause recursion?

* You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see file name without file extension. You can see the real file type (file extension) in the properties of the file via the right-click context menu in Windows Explorer.

That would be importing a bookmarks.html file that is present in the Firefox profile folder. Note that using Sync also can be a cause of bookmarks corruption.

Now that I have been away from my problem for a while I wanted to take another shot of fixing the problem. Currently I have no problems because I am not syncing my bookmarks. What I would like is to get an easy to understand process that I can execute to see if we can stop the “Getting Started”, Booksmark Bar and Booksmarks Toolbar Menu from replicating all of the time.

I think the challenge in responding to this request is that we haven't figure out the cause of the problem yet.

Did you have any comments on my questions/suggestions: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1062035?page=2#answer-733897

In an attempt to try to problem solve my syncing problem I have turned on my Desktop PC sync but for bookmarks only. I will monitor my PC to see if I start to see the redundant entries being made. If not I will turn sync back on my Laptop PC.

The "challenge" as I see it in this thread, is getting a response to the questions we ask! Keep in mind that this issue has been going on for quite awhile - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1054952 - from 03-31-15 and maybe for as long as a year. And Sync being involved wasn't even mentioned in that thread.

Specifically - Did running Places Maintenance do anything at all to clean up all the duplicates, or at least reduce their number?

And what jscher2000 asked - Is there any correlation between how often you exit Firefox and restart it and how many bars you have?

Ed-meister I finally fixed my problem by deleting all the files under the profile folder and importing my bookmarks from Chrome. I then took all my equipment Desktop PC, Laptop and deleted Firefox from my phone. Turned off syncing and there has been no “Getting Started”, Booksmark Bar and Booksmarks Toolbar Menu replicating. I like being able to use syncing and I was trying to narrow down where it was happening that’s why I just synced my Desktop to see what would happen. I did install Places Maintenance, ran it and it looks ok I think.
