Starting Firefox I get the "Send Error Report" popup window. It states "firefox.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close."

This just started today. Everything seems fine. I just push the popup off to the side and continue to use the browser. If I were to click on the, "Send Error Report" or the "Don't Send" buttons then Firefox just closes!

Strangest thing yet, trying to figure it out!

Oh, I tried the reboot without add-ons! Even did the reinstall, still the same???

It is best to be cautious with extensions that security software adds to Firefox as these tend to be buggy and it also usually takes time to get updates that work with next Firefox versions (Firefox 32 will be released next Tuesday).

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.

If possible uninstall your current Firefox version to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.

  • Do NOT remove "personal data" when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because this will remove all profile folders and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords including data in profiles created by other Firefox versions.

Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.

  • (32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
  • (64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.

If you keep having problems then also create a new profile.

Been trying different scans, when I can! I was able to run Malwarebytes, nothing showed. A lot of the others did nothing.

A really strange thing is when I tried the online scans, I get a unable to connect to the internet, check my proxy settings! I know I don't use any proxy setting and obviously I'm online!

Another whack job is Norton's icon is gone from my lower right menu! When I boot up now, I get the same popup window, but this time it says, Symantic Service Framework has encountered a problem and has to close.

But when I run the "Norton's" Live Update the icon returns and I can open Norton. But the minute I try and run Virus Scan, it goes a little way and then all the Norton's windows disappear again! I can get them back by running the "Live Update" but disappears again when trying to run Virus Scan.

Sounds like I'll be spending my time over at Bleeping!!!!

Continuing saga...

Got Norton's removed and reinstalled, seemed better, but not. Problems continue, now at boot-up I get Norton's Suite has encountered a problem.....

Also, after I removed it, when I reinstalled I get through the connection and am able to proceed! No (proxy access) issues, I never did change anything! Thinking maybe a upgrade with Norton's is causing all this???

So I'm waiting on Bleeping response. But am running Firefox and it runs fine. Still have that, "wanting to close and report to Microsoft," popup off to the side! Also, wondering, possible virus?

I had some trouble, and traced it to the Norton Toolbar. Disable it and try again.

Just got back online, still working on things, BUT ???

I went back and dumped Norton's which I get for free from Comcast. I downloaded the AVG scanner. Went through all the bells & whistles and things seem ok ???? But I haven't done the reboot yet, so will do that soon. But I wanted to drop a line here and let you all know what is happening.

And Thanks Fred, the funny thing was it did seem to have something to do with their update??? I do like Norton's but my son uses this AVG and he said it was better, lol!!! But again, everyone has their favorite!

Mine is Norton's so once I confirm that everything is good, I'm going to try redoing Norton's and I'll try your suggestions, if they don't fix it!!

Thanks again, and will let you know if this is the fixed!!!

Several added toolbars have been the cause of issues with Firefox. I hate to say it, but AVG is on that list.

This does not mean that Norton or AVG are bad. Just that it didn't work well on some systems. As to the why ? ! ? !

If there are other problems, disable all added toolbars and try again.

Good luck.

Yea I agree, it always seems these guys have to fix things that work fine!

But for now, I have to say the AVG setup went well and everything is running very nice, like before. BUT I did install their AVG PC Tuneup!!!

They allow you a free trail, I think it is for a day. But you can scan your computer and it does all the standard repairs and diagnostics! The one thing that was special was their program disabling function. Which removes it from memory when not in use! Works great for all those little memory hogs used for apps that I don't use that often. Plus after all the scanning and fixing my system starts up and shuts down, very quickly and seems to be running a lot better!

Got to say, I am really happy with the reboot and may just forgo the Norton's reinstall totally!
