Why has my private broswing for 20.1 vista stopped working? Even though it has a purple tab, it is still remembering everything! This is upsetting. Please help.

Whenever I attempt to do a new search, info from previous searches come up, as well as web addresses from sites I previously visited during private browsing. When I look to ensure that I am in private browsing the firefox tab is purple. I have erased everything manually and restarted my computer and tried again. Again, previous info remains. Please tell me what is happening and how it can be corrected, otherwise I will no longer be able to use the feature and will likely look to Google chrome use. This has been occurring for 2 days now. It previously worked fine. Thank you.

Hi there,

Hmm, that sounds like something you definitely don't want to happen! Private browsing should be private!

It could be that Firefox is having trouble saving preferences, because you mention that you've tried to clear all history yet you still see previous information, as if Firefox never deleted it.

Here are a couple of methods that could solve your problem:

Let me know if either of these methods takes care of your issue.

Cheers, David

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak files in the Firefox profile folder that store session data.

Delete the sessionstore.js file and possible sessionstore-##.js files with a number and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox profile folder.

Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).
