The FireFox 26 update was just pushed to us today. Myself and another co-worker are experienceing a screen blank when FireFox is changeing webpages or some other activity is going on rather than the FireFox browser just sitting there idle. The screen goes completely black and the only way to resolve is to power cycle the box.

Anyone else seeing this?

Ray

I've now encountered a Blue Scree whil browsing in FF 26!!

File: igdkmd32.sys STOP: (0x8645E008, 0x9342C9B0, 0x00000000, 0x0000000C)

You posted a thread on MozillaZine's forum about the problem:

Did you try this suggestion?

Try starting Firefox in Mozilla Safe Mode and see what happens.... Hold down your shift key while launching Firefox from its Icon

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox (you need to close and restart Firefox).

bRayj00, Someone at MozillaZine suggested, on Dec 20th,

Try turning off Hardware Acceleration under menu path Tools->Options->Advanced->General->Browsing->Use hardware acceleration when available.

...and you replied,

Thanks for the suggestion but it did not work. This is a serious bug in FF 26.

Did you restart Firefox after disabling hardware acceleration? See Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems.

In any case, since the file igdkmd32.sys is video-related and if disabling hardware acceleration in Firefox doesn't help, you should try updating your Intel Graphics driver or else contact Dell support. See Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL.

However, you also wrote on Dec 21st at Mozillazine,

If I did not see the problem in FF 25, why is it not a bug in 26? There were no other updates pushed besides the FF 26 one.

Have you tried downgrading to Firefox 25 for testing purposes? See Install an older version of Firefox and http://kb.mozillazine.org/Go_back_to_an_old_version_of_Firefox for more information. If the problem only occurs in Firefox 26 then it's a bug that needs to be reported to bugzilla.mozilla.org

Note that newer versions of Firefox tend to use the GPU more extensively, so it is always possible that hardware acceleration (i.e. using the GPU for calculations) is failing in the current release, but worked in the previous release.

For the record, I found this unconfirmed bug report filed Dec. 22, 2013:

  • Bug 952888 - Firefox 26 causes Windows 7 to crash randomly, identifying problem with igdkmd32.sys
