This problem appeared since I updated to FF24 (i have been using FF since version 2).

Every time I open firefox it opens again my last browsing session (Sometimes more than 20 tabs) and it's very annoying. Firefox is NOT hanging when I close it (I have checked in the Windows task manager), and in the startup option on FF I have a blank page (I have tried chaning this without success).

I also tried deleting the files sessionstore.bak & sessionstore.js, again with no success.

Hello,

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information.
Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Thank you.

You can change what Firefox should do when it starts up from Options > General (tab) > When FireFox starts (Section)

  To
   # Show My Home Page
   # Show a blank page
   # Show my window and tabs from last time

I think you have selected the 3rd option Show my window and tabs from last time. Try changing it and Make sure to press OK at the bottom of the Options window.

If this didn't work Try to reset your Firefox

I have a similar issue. I close FF24 with a single about:blank tab. When I open it again, sometimes it loads a few days old session with a bunch of tabs.

Excuse me but solution to reset Firefox to factory defaults is ridiculous. If I have to lose all my customizations after every glitch caused by new patch, I'll have to consider switching browsers.

You can check if you have an user.js file in the Firefox profile folder that sets the browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once pref to true.

First, thanks to everybody who have tried to help me. Some of the stuff you suggested I tried before posting here, like deleting cookies, deleting sessionstore.js & .bak and changing the firefox startup options between pages and blanks. Nothing worked.

The only thing that worked is to "Reset" firefox, but as someone stated it's not the best solution because it gives you some problems. I lost my extensions and the configurations I had. I didn't tried cor-el answer because I already resetted FF, but when the problem appears again I will try it.

More Info: This problem appeared after an energy shutdown, FF restored my tabs as its supposed, but then every time I closed FF it kept restoring tabs all the time.

I'm pretty sure it's a FF 24 problem, I had unexpected shutdowns with all the other firefox versions and never had this problem, also I'm not the only person with this problem and the proposed solution (reset firefox) it's a headache for power users like me (because you can loose everything).

I will try to replicate the problem to see if I can post more info about it.

Did you check if there is a user.js file in the Firefox profile folder?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Note that Windows hides some file extensions by default. Among them are .html and .ini and .js and .txt, so you may only see a name without file extension. You can see the real file extension (type) if you open the Properties of the file via the right-click context menu.

This is not only a F24 issue but also a FF25 issue. Besides, I am not facing this on Mac. I have been facing this on windows since 24.

I've tried:

  1. Closing those windows (were pinboard.in's add-on pop-up to bookmark and mark RIL)
  2. Exiting and closing every tab and windows and then finally exiting the final tab (in a window)
  3. Selecting about:blank to be opened when browser starts and it worked fine, only about:blank opened but as soon as I switched back to 3rd option: "Tabs and windows from last time" the problem reappeared and the same pop-ups came out again.
  4. I am yet to try other options like the one suggested by cor-el, but I hope I don't have to try Reset Firefox. This is actually ridiculous. I don't want to lose any idea or go through manually copying/merging everything all over again. Defeats the purpose of using Firefox Sync.
  5. browser.sessionstore.resume_session_once setting it to TRUE doesn't work either.

I also noticed (while following on suggestion by @cor-el):

  1. I have these files: sessionstore.bak, sessionstore.bak-20131025151332 and sessionstore.js and the URLs that are opening in pop-ups everytime I start Firefox are written all over these files. Is it okay to delete these files or maybe clean them somehow?

I reckon ".js" files are not meant to store data in them, isn't it?

Maybe I'll file a bug report if there's not one (?) already.

Update:

I deleted some more files which I thought were left overs of add-ons I had tried and removed. This also, mistakenly, clean Ghostery preference.

Next time I restarted I didn't have any previous session. But it might have because of point 5 I performed because this was supposed to restore a session a session only once and when I had written this comment, this was that "once" and when I restarted it was gone.
