I used Chrome but have now installed Firefox (latest version) and have made it the default browser. However, https links still open in Chrome. I remember having to use regedit to set Chrome as the default browser and I guess that I have to amend what I did. How exactly do I do this?

You need to edit your registry settings.

Note: manipulating Windows registry can result in serious system damage that could need a Windows reinstallation. Please be very careful and follow the steps exactly as told here.

  1. Start Windows Registry Editor. (Win+R, regedit)
  2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\http\shell\open\command (If some of the stated folders does not exist, make it)
  3. Change (Default) value to your Firefox executable path between "" (For example: "c:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe").
  4. Do the same with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\https\shell\open\command, HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.html\shell\open\command and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.htm\shell\open\command

Close and logoff. When logging in back, Firefox should be the default browser.

Have done exactly as you stated and all the register entries clearly show Firefox as the correct program. Nonetheless https links still open in Chrome. There must be some other register entry which is causing problems!
