How do I remain logged into websites when Firefox is closed?

more options

I have tried changing the settings, but even though the passwords and user ID's are remembered, I still have to log in each time I access the Internet.

Generally speaking, websites recognize you (your browser) by the cookies they set. They do not always keep your session open indefinitely, but if your can be recognized by the site in other browsers, it should also work in Firefox.

In order for those cookies to persist between sessions, the site first needs to have permission to set a persistent cookie. When viewing the site, you can check its permissions using either of these methods":

  • right-click > View Page Info > Permissions
  • Tools menu > Page Info > Permissions

Under Set Cookies you want Allow.

If you changed that setting, then you will want to set fresh cookies with new extended expiration dates. Save any work you're doing on the site, then go to:

  • right-click > View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies" button or
  • Tools menu > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies" button

Clear any cookies set there, close the dialog, reload the page, and log in again. Now you have cookies that should last.

The next thing is to make sure the cookies aren't being cleared by Firefox at shutdown, by an add-on, or by external security/privacy software.

For Firefox's built-in feature, you can check here:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Privacy

If the history setting is "Firefox will: Remember history" then cookies should not be cleared. If the setting is "Firefox will: Use custom settings for history" then you can manually adjust the "Clear history when Firefox closes" feature (either turn it off or make sure it isn't clearing cookies).

For add-ons, if any appear to relate to cookies, you may need to adjust their settings.

For external software, it varies widely whether your security software touches your Firefox settings. If you think this might be an issue, which software are you using.

Edit: I should mention that the above does not apply to private browsing mode. You cannot store cookies across private browsing sessions.
