Basic info: using Firefox 14, was working fine until i came back from vacation, fired up my PC, and updated 3 things, Adobe Flash, Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit), and AMD Catalyst control center with the new 12.8 update, then restarted.

Have slowly been attempting to pin down the cause. Uninstalled Flash, firefox still crashes. Tried moving the Mozilla folder to desktop so I could simulate a reset, firefox crashed anyway, so i put the old folder back.

Read some troubleshooting pages on the firefox page and went down the list making sure all was updated and then tried running in Safe mode. So far no crash and we are going on 15 min here, the best I've seen so far.

Note: Just realized my Java version was out of date, uninstalled the old versions and installed the new version. Will see if this helps.

Note 2: Nope, Firefox is still crashing regularly. Java was not the issue. Didn't think so, but was hoping....

Try the suggestions in this reply:

You can also try to boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that works.

It could be an extension causing the crashing, or maybe a problem caused by hardware acceleration. You can disable hardware acceleration from Options > Advanced > General, and see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I already tried disabling hardware acceleration after seeing it mentioned in another person's issue. It apparently resolved it for them, but sadly, not so for me.

My extensions are fairly few, and have not been an issue in the past, even after I updated to Firefox 14 initially, but I suppose I could try disabling them...

They include: Download Status Bar 0.9.10 Adblock Plus 2.1.2 Download Helper 4.9.9 Reminder Fox 2.0 Bitdefender AntiPhising Toolbar 8.0

Going to go through and disable them one by one, but if you know of a known issue with any of those, feel free to mention it...i'd be much obliged.

Just an update: Went through an disabled ALL my extensions. When it STILL crashed, I went through and disabled ALL my plugins, including Java... and still we have the crashing.

WELP! I'm officially stumped so far...

Thanks cor-el, had previously tried what you had mentioned and it didn't seem to work then, tried it again and restarted firefox immediately after doing so. As of the current time Firefox has been running (not in Safe mode) for over a day with no crashes.

You are a lifesaver, as I wouldn't have thought to try it again after the initial failure, but that time I didn't restart firefox after trying it, and that seems to have been a deciding factor.

Thanks much. Very nice to be able to browse sans crashing again.

yeah i have been having the same issue. i don't recall updating Firefox but i did update to the new catalyst control 12.8 and that's when i noticed my problems started. could be the culprit. im gonna try and revert back to an older version of catalyst and see what happens

Have now reverted back to version 13 and turned off automatic update, seems to be working a treat now. Version 14.0.1 was just giving me grief every day.

It's freezing/crashing all the time for me as well and it started happening after I updated to the lastest amd catalyst drivers earlier today, that's obviously the problem, but why?

I'm currently using v.12.0, updated from 8. something earlier to see if that would fix the problem but nope, getting v.13 now and hoping for the best.. I'll get back with a complaint if it doesn't work.

Hi edasvangen, try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. You usually need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).

(WIN) orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Advanced
(MAC) Firefox menu > Preferences > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Use hardware acceleration when available"

If you restart Firefox, is the issue resolved (or at least greatly improved)?

That did indeed work, already did that as soon as the first crash appeared again earlier though and it's been running just fine for some time now so, it's "fixed".

Hey all! I just wanted to peep in and say that I was experiencing the same - Firefox was crashing erratically every few minutes and jscher2000's advice - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/que.../935304#answer-363382 - to disable hardware acceleration seems to have done the trick!

I should mention that I too have just recently upgrading my AMD Catalyst suite/display drivers to 12.8.

The following is a list of things I tried to fix the crashes before I found this thread:

  • Disabled all addons
  • Re-enabled only the most used addons one by one
    • No luck with this technique - which was a surprise because I thought it might be one of my addons like LastPass or XMarks
  • Uninstalled Flash (as per the advice at 11.3 Crashes Firefox then installed 10.3
    • That didn't work so I re-installed the latest version of Flash - 11.4
      • This seemed to work for some time but YouTube kept crashing so I tried the HTML5 version of it - which didn't work
  • Finally stumbled upon this thread and as of the last 30 mins and a fair bit of YouTube videos playing in multiple tabs, FF seems to be playing nice (I can't live without my Firefox!)

Hope this comment helps others locate this thread faster! I don't recall ever having turned on the hardware acceleration so maybe this might be something that Mozilla should keep turned off by default.

Regardless, I would like to request that the Mozilla team (kudos to you and many, many thanks for the most amazing browser EVER!) please look into the hardware acceleration feature cause it almost definitely has gone wonky with AMD Radeon 6870... In case anyone's interested, my main system specs are:

  • Asus Rampage Extreme IV Motherboard
  • Intel Socket 2011 i7 processor
  • 16 GB DDR3 RAM
  • Two Saphire Radeon 6870 / GDDR5 1GB RAM VGA cards with CrossfireX enabled

Once again, kudos and thanks to the Mozilla team and many, many thanks to the OP and jscher2000!!!

Hi all, original post person here with an update. Very glad that other people with this problem are getting it worked out. Just thought I would mention that firefox 15 came out recently (my updater had to be prompted to go go looking for it though...)

Anyway, thought I would give it a go, and after confirming that it worked normally for a day or so, wanted to test out the hardware acceleration option, to see if they fixed it in FF15.

Short answer is they did not. Here's what I did:

-Enabled Hardware Acceleration under Options -> Advanced -> General tab. -Restarted Firefox

Right away I started seeing issues graphically, blacked out portions of the screen and such, and thought, "oh crud". Sure enough, within 5 min, Firefox had crashed again.

I figured, well, it's probably busted, but I will assume it was a fluke and try again.

15-20 min and 4-5 crashes later, I had no more doubts that the issue was NOT resolved in FF15. So I de-enabled hardware acceleration and restarted Firefox 15, and so far no issues again.

Of note is that, since I updated directly from FF14, it kept all my old settings like it usually does, and so hardware acceleration is not turned back on automatically if you upgrade to FF15 and had it turned off in the previous version.

Also, I'm running 2 R6950's with Crossfire, so i'm pretty sure, given what anand.pathak.sharma posted, that it's a blanket issue with that 12.8 update, and not with specific cards. I also have a friend who is running what I believe are 6870s who I warned about this issue (though he mostly uses Chrome), and he said that this fix worked for him, and he has not had any issues on his other machine, which uses 2 GTX 560s (GeForce) with Firefox.

So I'd lean towards saying this is an issue with Firefox interacting with that update. If anybody has had a different/similar experience with this issue, feel free to post about it. Hopefully, the good folks at Mozilla are aware, and working on it, but just couldn't quite get a fix implemented for FF 15.

Also am going to try and add an image for anyone who might be confused about finding the Hardware Acceleration.

Later.
