How can I move bookmarks to new Mac when the Sync page says "this add-on has been removed by its author"?

I tried to move bookmarks by creating a Sync profile but it gave me the message "the add-on was removed by its author" and I don't know what that means. Within the forum I found a message indicating I can do this by first updating to Firefox 9 or something, but my current OS is stuck with the Firefox 3.6.26 version and won't upgrade beyond that until I upgrade my OS on my newer computer. So how can I save and move bookmarks to my new computer, a Mac with 10.6?

You can restore a JSON backup in the Bookmarks Manager (Library).

Hi tjphoto40,

I would suggest that you first back up your personal information and bookmarks, just in case. You can find details in the article Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles. Then you can transfer them to your new Mac. The sync add-on is no longer supported since it is now built into Firefox.

You might want to take a look at the TenFourFox project. It is a fork of Firefox that supports 10.4 OS. You might be able to use sync with that build, but I cannot guarantee it.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks, Matt. I'll try what you suggest with the backing up of information. I'm not sure how I would then transfer to the new computer, but I'll check into the link about backing up info first.

I checked the Backing Up link and can do what it suggests, but I notice that in the section there concerning Moving to a New Computer, it again refers to Firefox Sync as the way to do that. So I wonder how I manage the move to the new computer if I have no Sync to work with.

I think it only refers to sync if you look at the bookmarks only link. The full backup should require moving your complete profile folder to the new computer and should not require sync.

FYI: Sync now requires the latest Firefox releases and can no longer be used with Firefox 3.6.x versions.

Thanks again. The saved file seems to be a "json" which I'm not familiar with. The Restore directions say to choose the file for restoring from a manual backup. When I click on the json file, it says there's no default application designated to open the file, so I wonder how I'm to open it or whether it will read properly with Firefox open on the new computer.
