Regarding Firefox 4 does not ask to save tabs and windows on exit even after trying all suggestions

After installing Firefox 4, Firefox would no longer ask to save tabs and windows on exit. Even after trying all suggestions to resolve the problem, the problem continued. Under the corrupted files suggestion to rename two files, that also did not help. The original file names would be recreated automatically, so both file name versions would exist in that folder. NOTHING resolves the problem.

Unfortunately, since that is a very desirable feature I, like other people who do not like Firefox 4, have gone back to an earlier version of Firefox.

You can set the warn prefs on the about:config page to true via the right-click context menu or toggle with a double left-click.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get back the previous session.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.

Another possibility is to use:

  • Tools > Options > General > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my windows and tabs from last time"

Thanks! Sounds promising, And I promise to report back if the problem was solved. But out of frustration, I had reverted back to FF 3.6.15. I will now have to re-install 4.0 before I can try these suggestions. However, do not have time to do that right now.

Firefox 4 automatically saves your tabs and windows when you exit to restore them just click the Firefox button>History menu>Restore Previous Session and it will open your previous tabs and windows in addition to your current tabs and windows.

THE SOLUTION

1)Click on FIREFOX or TOOLS 2)Click ADD ONS 3)Do a search for TABS MIX PLUS 4)Install it 5)Click on TOOLS and then TABS MIX PLUS OPTIONS and then the SESSIONS tab. 6)UN-check... "use firefox's built-in Session Restore feature" and make sure "enable session manager" IS checked. Click all the things you want Firefox to do (like....ask before saving !!) then click APPLY.

I tried a lot of hacks and this is the only thing that worked. thanx goes to ....www.howtogeeks.com

When I go to the History menu>Restore Previous Session, that item is not active for selection. It is gray and cannot be clicked on.

Not having FF warn to save and quit on the next session as a default action is very unhelpful for the average user who will never venture into about:config (and really shouldn't!)

I lead a user experience at one of the largest IT companies; our research drove us in the opposite direction of Mozilla's team.

We warn just as Firefox always has. If the user says Save and Quit, they auto open on the next session. If the user chooses Quit, we keep the settings and prompt on next open whether they want to open all tabs (and list them so they can see what they were doing session and make an informed decision)

The reality is after opening a new session, the "Restore Last Session" without the tabs info and in the non-highlighted font and button is next to useless. I made this point with FF4, but FF5 made it clear that the Mozilla folks have little user experience knowledge and ignore input from experts.

So I have begun to reply "Google Chrome" over FF when asked which browser I recommend.

I hope that the Mozilla folks listen and understand why they have got it so wrong.

Firefox 4 and later versions save the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.
Use "File > Exit" or "Firefox > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox") if you want to restore multiple windows.
You can use "History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.
You may need to click the orange/gray Firefox button to see History.
There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default about:home Home page.
