I already fixed this problem once, by going via the "run" and firefox.exe route, but it no longer works. I am not a technological person, please explain steps simply and explain any jargon if necessary. Appreciate the help, thanks.

What do you want to accomplish?

A new window (File > New Window) should open with the Home page(s). 

Tools > Options > General|Main > Startup: Home page
Tools > Options > General|Main > Startup: "When Firefox Starts": "Show my home page"  "Show a blank page"
