When I add to my bookmarks in Firefox 3.6.3, the name of the page is shown as is an individual icon unique to the particular page. However, when I close a Firefox session and then open a new one, I find that the unique icons have all been replaced by generic icons, the same for all bookmarked pages. When I click on the page, the unique icon returns only to disappear when I close the Firefox session. At times it is quicker for me to identify a page in the list by icon than by reading all the page names that can be annoying at times. I don't ever recall using a browser that did not have this feature. How do I enable this? I am using ubuntu amd 10.04 if it makes any difference.

Those icons are called "favicons". Maybe the Favicons do not display will help.
