multiple minute delay whenever I open a folder in a new tab or window (win10)

Since installing Supernova, I find a huge (multiple minute) delay whenever I open a folder to a new tab or window. There was zero delay on the prior version to open a folder, so it appears to be specific to Supernova. I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned it on the forums yet, so it seems it might just be something about my particular setup. Can anyone help me diagnose what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Please post your results AFTER updating to version 115.3.0 later next week

Thanks for the response, though it's a bit cryptic. Is this a known issue that will be resolved in the new release?

Is it possible for me to download that version now as a beta? I currently cannot use the Thunderbird installation on my system as it locks up for minutes at a time.

Thanks!

1. It could be any number of issues. 2. It doesn't yet exist. The real thing comes in a few days.

Until then,

Does problem go away?

I haven't tried it with Windows in safe mode, but I did try with Thunderbird in Troubleshoot mode and the issue is still there. I just set up a brand new computer that is phenomenally faster in every regard than the computer I moved over from, except for this one issue. I also recently reset another computer to factory condition and installed Supernova initially, but had to revert back to an older version of Thunderbird after experiencing this same issue, which didn't occur at all on the old version.

Not sure if that helps any further, but I do look forward to seeing this get resolved!

Safe mode is a worthy test. Also, please post a few of your larger folder sizes in MB and number of messages.

Just updated to the 115.3.0. It took about five minutes to just start up TB. I was hopeful that would be a one time thing for it to get its bearings, but no such luck. Opening another folder in a new tab is still taking several minutes, during which time TB is completely locked up and unusable.

I will say that after the new tab is established in TB, I can navigate to different folders within my accounts just fine. There appears to just be a glitch when opening a new tab.

I'll try the full Windows Safe Mode later today and report back. However, I have already confirmed that the pre-Supernova version of Thunderbird does not have any such issue, so even if Windows Safe Mode somehow resolves this, it remains a Supernova-specific issue.

I do have large folders with hundreds of emails in each, and my main storage account is around 65GB. However, again, the previous version of Thunderbird does not display any such issue, with the same account settings.

I'm currently working around the issue by just opening up the tab(s) I need and leaving them there, but this is definitely something that should not thwart the new version compared to older versions.

OK, I think I've figured something out here.

I tried running Windows in Safe Mode with networking, but couldn't get my laptop to actually be online because it doesn't have an integrated ethernet cable, and I guess the drivers don't work with the wi-fi or the docking station in Safe Mode. Anyway, I opened TB while in Safe Mode and it did open right up quite quickly. However, by running in Safe Mode I also did not have my hard drives unencrypted, so the "storage" accounts that I keep in TB also could not be opened.

With that information in hand, I went back to non-Safe Mode Windows and opened TB, first with no internet connection (which was still slow) and then with my drives still encrypted (not available), and the situation where the drives were not available opened right up with no problem.

So, my diagnosis is that Supernova does not like me storing my email on a drive other than the drive where TB exists. It seems that opening the program initially, and opening a new tab triggers some process that has a problem accessing the other drive. To be clear, the other drive exists on the same incredibly fast NVME mSata as TB, but just on a different partition.

Again, this is not an issue in older versions of TB, so is there anything that can be done to remedy this issue?

Thanks!

I just updated to the newest version of Thunderbird (115.3.1), and am still experiencing the same issue. Does anyone have any ideas about what might have changed in Supernova to cause this issue? From what I can tell, there is some glitch that tremendously slows down TB when opening a new tab, while having accounts that save their messsages on another partition.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One of my colleages got an auto-upgrade to Supernova and ended up having to revert back too because of the delays. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on that causes these issues?

If your version 115 performance was OK before 115.2.3, then 115.4.0 might have a fix for that.

Otherwise, unfortunately there is not sufficient data here on which to base a recommendation or say whether your problem may be gone in a very recent version. 115.4.2 is coming out in a few days but so far it does not have any performance fixes.

The only advice I can offer then is to step through https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems and please post your results.

Another possibility - use https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiling-thunderbird-performance to get a performance profile

Are you able to create a profile?

Hi, Sorry, no, I haven't had a chance to get back in to this. I just halted all our updates as I didn't see a solution coming. We just had a system free up, so I can let it update and run a profile this week sometime.

OK, I did the performance profile and went through the process of opening a folder in a new tab. Once with a folder in my incoming account (saved in the same drive as my profile) and once with a folder in my local IMAP store, which is stored on another drive.

I uploaded it and have a link, but am not sure whether it's appropriate to share that here. Is it best to send this just to you Wayne?

Thanks!
