I've been using Firefox for two years on my laptop (currently using Chrome just to write this), and today the browser closed all my windows taking me back to the desktop. When I went to reopen Firefox, the desktop icon had been removed. I redownloaded it and it took me back to my previous windows even, so I didn't think anything of it, but I noticed that the desktop icon was gone once more and yet the browser was still open. It was fine for a couple of hours, but then the "Windows Defender" pop up kept coming up telling me there was a virus and to restart my computer. I restarted it, and went back to download Firefox again, but now it keeps saying "Failed—Virus Detected".

Try the full offline setup and not the small online stub installer for Windows. It is a link with text like Download in another language or for another operating system on the same page you downloaded the stub from.

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/#product-desktop-release

Some antivirus clients can have false positives with the stub installer (often due to 7-zip extractor) still even though it has existed for a very long time.

Defender has been reported doing false positives with the language packs in Firefox a short while ago and now this hmm.
