Thunderbird hangs on gmail setup

I've been using Thunderbird for a number of years. I recently went back to using Windows from Linux, and am having difficulty with the Windows version of Thunderbird. The issue is when I go to set up my gmail accounts, I get a box popping up that should show my google account so I log in through there, but it hangs and never moves past. The pics below shows both the window that pops up that never changes and the server settings.

I've let it sit for up to an hour but nothing changes.

I've looked and haven't seen this question elsewhere, so I figure it must be something on my end. I'm using Thunderber 91.9.1 on Windows 11 Home OS build 22000.675. I'm not using any sort of VPN, and I've tried with Windows firewall both on and off, no changes.

There should be some content visible in the window shown in your left screenshot. Does it help when you try to drag it a little wider and higher?

Thanks for the reply. I've gone through the article you've linked. I did check it again and I do have accepting coookies enabled.

The window can't resize. I know that's where my account info to login to google should come up, but I just get that blank window. I can't resize it, I can't even copy the address that's shown in it.

re :. I did check it again and I do have accepting coookies enabled.

You may have it selected but is it retaining the cookies - check all the following:

In Menu app icon > Preferences > Privacy & Security Web Content section

  • Click on 'Show cookies' button

Do you see any mention of google ?

For 'Web Content'

If nothing - and you have cookies enabled is something is deleting your cookies? Do you have any product like CCleaner, WiseCleaner or even in your Anti-virus product set up to clean up files eg: session, cookies, etc. If yes, then you need to make the Thunderbird profile folder exempt.

I have the exact same issue as Chuck52. The window hangs, like it is waiting for a response from Google. I can minimize or maximize from the taskbar, but the entire window is just painted with the background color; completely non-responsive.

Cookies. I have *no* cookies at all, even though all are accepted, and I have an explicit "Allow" entry for https://accounts.google.com

Additional information to check:

Check for a VPN - please note I was using Norton and in an update, Norton installed and switched on a VPN causing no end of issues. I had no idea this VPN existed let alone was enabled.

Windows OS can also have VPN which works only on specific triggers: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/identity-protection/vpn/vpn-auto-trigger-profile

Check localhost server - if you use a localhost server eg: Apache with XAMPP or similar, perhaps it defaults to starting up when you boot up computer. This needs to be switched off as it may be blocking google from accessing same port or using localhost. Note: some Linux systems will have eg: Apache auto installed and you may not be aware of it.

Check Firewall - Thunderbird must be an allowed program. Note: There have been occasions when the Firewall does not recognise a Thunderbird update to be same program. So, if Firewall has Thunderbird as allowed - Exit Thunderbird - Access Firewall - block Thunderbird, ok it and then go back into Firewall and set Thunderbird as allowed, ok it again.

What is your default browser ? Could browser have setting to not allow pop up or localhost?

See if files are not allowing cookies etc to get stored properly:

  • Menu app icon > More Troubleshooting Information
  • Under 'Application Basics' - Profile Folder - click on 'Open Folder'

This opens a new window showing the contents of your current in use profile name folder.

  • Exit Thunderbird now - this is important.

Look for the following files and delete them.

  • cert8.db - obselete file
  • key3.db - obselete file
  • pkcs11.txt (This should exist but some people find it is missing)
  • secmod.db - obselete file
  • session.json
  • xulstore.json

NOTE: Do NOT delete:

  • key4.db
  • cert9.db
  • logins.json

Start Thunderbird New pkcs11.txt, session.json, xulstore.json files will get created.

Enter password at prompt.

Okay, I went through all the steps above.

I did have cccleaner running. I added the Thunderbird folders to the exemption list. Then I just turned cccleaner off.

I do not have any VPN configured for this laptop.

I turned off Windows Firewall.

I'm using Google Chrome, Version 102.0.5005.115

I went through and deleted the files you listed, then re-entered password.

All resulted in the same hang screen described above. I also show no cookies like Dave Godman.

Incidently I tried sea-monkey and had no issues configuring my google accounts with that program. I really do like Thunderbird more though, and would prefer to use it. I'm a loss here.

re :I did have cccleaner running.

Programs of that type cause no end of problems when it comes to removing session, cookies, passwords etc. Suggest you do the same with the Anti-Virus. Do not allow scanning of your Thunderbird profile folders.

re:I turned off Windows Firewall.

You do not need to turn it off. You just make sure Thunderbird is an allowed app.

re:I went through and deleted the files you listed,

Please be certain you exited Thunderbird first before deleting those files, otherwise it will not work.

Q: Are you trying to create a new gmail mail account or are you just trying to update the Authentication Method on a gmail account that was previously working OK ?

If updating Authentication Method on an gmail mail account.. See if the currently stored passwords are getting in the way.

  • Select 'Menu app icon' > 'Preferences' > 'Privacy & Security '
  • Passwords' section
  • Click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • select the mailbox:// gmail line (if pop account )and click on 'Remove' button
  • select the imap:// gmail line (if imap account )and click on 'Remove' button
  • select the smtp:// gmail line and click on 'Remove' button
  • Then click on 'Close'

Restart Thunderbird and retry to enter password at prompt.

re : The issue is when I go to set up my gmail accounts,

We have had lot of people who previously had gmail accounts configured and now need to update the Authentication Method, so there is a lot of issues with it.

The image you supplied looks like you have created the account, but it's now not able to get passed the google login, which makes me ask if you created this account previously and are now updating the Authentication Method. Can you offer a bit of clarification?

Sure, here are the answers to your questions;

I had closed out of thunderbird before I deleted my profile. The screenshot are from when I manually created the connection after letting the automic configuration not work.

This is for a new install of Thunderbird. I got a new laptop with Windows 11 about a month ago, installed Thunderbird. I have never had it working. So I'm not trying to change the authentication method. This is a first time setup of Thunderbird on this computer.

What other info can I provide?

Have you set up the Firewall to allow Thunderbird as a trusted app? If no then you need to allow as a trusted app so it gets past the Firewall. Here is a Youtube video which may help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNxHytT70AM

Please confirm you have done this. Thunderbird must not get blocked by Firewall otherwise it will never work.

If still getting the blank screen: Then see if the following gets it working. Just in case a javascript issue causes the problem. Also check to see if javacript is allowed in the browser you use.

In Thunderbird:

  • Menu app icon > Preferences > General
  • Scroll to bottom and click on 'Config Editor' button.
  • It may say be careful - so ok it :)
  • It opens in a new tab...in the top search type: script.all
  • Look for this line: javascript.allow.mailnews

Is the value set as True or False ? If 'False' then toggle the value to say 'True'

I'm hoping this has nothing to do with 'Smart Apps Control' which is a new thing Windows has created in version 11. (apparently not fully deployed in the 10 updated to 11 version) but it should be up and running in new computer with Windows 11 installed.

"Smart Apps" a new thing in Windows 11. You may or may not be aware of it. This is a good explanation. I suggest you give a read. https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/topic/what-is-smart-app-control-285ea03d-fa88-4d56-882e-6698afdb7003

Thunderbird is defintely allowed through the firewall. I can see it, and I have public and private allowed.

For Javascipt.allows.mailnews, that doesn't exist on my installation. I attached screenshots of me searching, and it does not come up at all. No Script.all appears.

Lastly, I wondered if it could be my ad-blocker on my browser, so I removed it. Still the same issue.

more options

See if Chrome is blocking the display. I'm wondering if this is like same kind of sandbox issue. It is definately a block from somewhere. Thunderbird you say is allowing cookies and accepting third party cookies and has exception to allow https://accounts.google.com

Some Anti-Virus can be a pain eg: Avast Mail Shield

Check your browser settings as this is a Chrome window: Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Cookies and other site data, and check Allow all cookies Perhaps if it is set to Block third-party cookies in Incognito, then oauth2 may fail.
