I have tried multiple times to just change my homepage. I am coming from Chrome, but I used to use Firefox a lot. I am going into my preferences almost daily to change my homepage to just the standard firefox home, because I thought I was just crazy. It will not save my preference though, and I have no clue why. I do not have any extensions enabled or installed other than the ones that come with a fresh install of firefox. I even have those disabled right now. I have some themes downloaded, but I only am using the one provided my Mozilla. Nothing is allowing to save changes.

I will change it, and for like the next few times I open my browser, it will be saved, but after a day, its gone. I still have no clue as to why.

Can anyone help out?

Can you go to menu ≡ -> Help -> About Firefox and paste here the about window? Thanks.

It's possible an add-on or something is changing your setting. Or your setting is not saved.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

Macs: Make sure you install Firefox properly and that you do not run Firefox from within the DMG (Disk Images) file. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Start Firefox using Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode {web link}

A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode (not Refresh).

Change your setting and save it. Close Firefox. Wait a few minutes. Open the browser again in Troubleshoot(Safe) Mode. Was your choice still there?

Hey, so I think I figured out what is happening, but I do not understand why it is doing this.

So, I use Firefox Sync to keep my bookmarks and everything synced between my two computers and my phone. I decided to try to turn sync off for my preferences to see if that changes anything. It seems to allow me to change it now. Is there any way that I could turn sync back on for it and have it still remain the same?

I think my preferences are not being updated by the sync, so when my computer syncs, it pulls the outdated preferences.

As a test, deselect settings on the sync.

You can exclude the home page from Sync by setting this pref to false on the about:config page.

  • services.sync.prefs.sync.browser.startup.homepage = false

There are services.sync.prefs.sync<pref-name> prefs with a value true for each pref that is included in syncing preferences. You can set the corresponding services.sync.prefs.sync.<pref-name> pref to false to prevent syncing this pref.

  • prefs that have a corresponding services.sync.prefs.sync.<pref-name> pref that is set to true will be synced to other devices
  • prefs that have a corresponding services.sync.prefs.sync.<pref-name> pref that is set to false will be excluded from syncing
