Failing to send e-mail

I have just set up Thunderbird for the first time as a client for my e-mail on domain mozart.co.uk

It is seeing the received mail fine. But when I send an e-mail (as a reply or a new mail) I get a window "Sending message" with a progress bar. As it reaches the end I get an error message (every time):

"Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mozart.co.uk was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again."

Can anyone tell me what I have to do?

(Hope this can be fixed as, apart from this, I really like the program!)

Is your domain on godaddy with Office 365 mail?

My domain mozart.co.uk is hosted by GoDaddy, with e-mail managed by CPanel, and I have Office 365. But (for historical reasons) the Office 365 is a separate account with Microsoft independent of GoDaddy. So I don't know if your link applies, but I'll have a look - thanks.

OK, I've looked at https://community.godaddy.com/s/feed/0D53t00006Vm3mwCAB and it *might* be the answer.

But it looks incredibly complicated and I'd have to do a lot of reading to understand what I was doing. I've never heard of ExchangeOnline and I'm not a complete novice at Windows or Office (having used Windows and written desktop applications for 30 years).

Thanks for pointing it out, I really appreciate it, but there surely must be an easier way! Otherwise I'm going to have to go on using Outlook as my e-mail client, although I much preferred the look and feel of Thunderbird. Outlook configured with no problems.

[Before I asked here, I had a long on-line chat with GoDaddy about configuring Thunderbird, and they were no help at all. I feel they ought to know something about this (and be able to do something) as the configuration problems are only for GoDaddy-hosted e-mail: I had no problems configuring Thunderbird for my gmail account.]

Thanks again. Any more ideas gratefully received.

Is the godaddy account supposed to use the O365 servers, outlook.office365.com and smtp.office365.com? If so, it might be as simple as using OAuth2 authentication, instead of 'normal password', which is used with the same servers, but for consumer hotmail/outlook.com accounts.

I'm afraid I'm completely out of my depth here.

My Office 365 subscription is from Microsoft, completely independent of GoDaddy, and I have no mental model of how Office works or what an Office Server might do (and if an office server were necessary, how I could use Word when not on line).

I note that Thunderbird does offer different modes of authentication, but 'OAUTH2' is not listed among them - see attached image.

I'm probably being a bit simple here but I'm afraid you've lost me.  :-(

If your server name is in fact mozart.co.uk, you probably aren't using GoDaddy's O365 mail service, so the authentication is normal password. But maybe the correct server for your service is smtpout.secureserver.net:

Gave it a try. I got the usual 'sending message' attached. But then it just hung instead of putting up the 'connection lost' message (as was the case with the other server name).

I'm sure I'm *not* using GoDaddy's O365 service: I already had Office 365 from Microsoft before I went with GoDaddy web hosting, so I didn't need to pay for it from them too.

I'm not sure of GoDaddy's terminology but 'workspace email' may be an alternative to the 'CPanel e-mail' which I'm using.

Sorry got it wrong. I did get a message

"Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtpout.secureserver.net was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again."

but it took quite a while to appear!

As a troubleshooting step, try to start Windows 10 in safe mode with networking enabled.

Does the problem go away?

Tried 3 possibilities in Safe Mode with Networking:

1. SMTP Server: smtpout.secureserver.net Port: 567

"Sending" message box: progress bar gets to right and it hangs. Untill, after a couple of minutes, I press Cancel.

2. SMTP Server: mozart.co.uk Port 567

"Sending" message box: progress bar gets to right and then I get another message box:. "Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) mozart.co.uk was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again."

3. SMTP Server: mail.mozart.co.uk Port 567

Same result as 2.

Conclusion: the behaviour in Safe Mode is the same as in normal mode. But thanks for the suggestion!
