Hello, After I start Firefox with Duckduckgo, I begin impatiently typing something in. Then I find that Firefox wants the master password and has swallowed everything I typed. Can this process of entering the master password be sped up or changed so that I do not have to type everything over?

Are you using Sync as this is a possible reason to ask for the Primary Password on startup ?

This is because the credentials to login to the Sync account are stored in the Password Manager. You can open Lockwise (about:logins)Password Manager to force Firefox to ask for the Primary Password.
