The new update is terrible and makes it much more difficult to see where unread mail is. How can I get back to the old user interface with a readable set of folder colors and icons?

The older version of Thunderbird for years and years had very clear bolding that you could instantly see which accounts had new mail. I use Thunderbird for 8 different accounts and losing that functionality is hampering me.
