Hi

I had Firefox from my email, tomspencer@eml.cc.

I tried to create a second Firefox profile for gwendaspencer@eml.cc.

Instead they appear to have merged. I have also lost all my old bookmarks. I'm not even sure that I can log into the Firefox browser associated with tomspencer@eml.cc.

Thanks for considering this.

Are you using Firefox Sync? Is that what you are using those ...spencer@eml.cc email addresses for?

Thanks for responding.

I suspect that I am using Firefox Sync. But I don't want to.  That option came up, as if syncing was the only way to create a second Firefox account. I guess I was wrong.

If I have unintentionally synced them, is it still possible to still get two Firefox icons at the bottom of my screen (i.e. two separate Firefox accounts/systems), and, preferably, my old bookmarks too.

Kind regards

Tom

The Firefox web browser doesn't "need" an email address just to be able to use Firefox. But upon installation and when a new Profile is created Firefox will offer the optional Sync feature; too many users misread the intention of that optional offering and take it as a requirement for using Firefox.

Sync does use a Firefox Account. And neither isn't directly related to creating and having separate Firefox Profiles.

Thanks very much for your informative and prompt response.

I'll need time to follow up on the leads you kindly suggested. Incidentally, I tried hard to avoid Sync, but despite you saying it was optional it kept appearing as a prerequisite to what I was trying to do; open a second Firefox icon in the Task Manager at the bottom of my screen.

tomspencer.... I am in the same boat.. kinda.

I am trying to have a login to sync bookmarks, passwords, etc for email1 on all computers... and a second login (separate email address) to have the same for my business email address. But it comes up with a message that says the sync will merge with the information of another profile in which firefox was used on this device.

To me... this is a security issue for some although simply an annoyance for me..... but a HUGE annoyance as I try to keep things separate so I don't get sidetracked! LOL But what about a family that used a family imac for example... everyone would have everyone else's bookmarks and passwords which seems totally opposite of what firefox boasts their platform to be... security! I'm so confused why it is set up this way!

You fail to recognize or understand the basic features that are built into the computers operating system! Each person who uses a shared personal computer should have their own user account. https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-other-users-on-your-mac-mtusr001/mac

Furthermore, each user account may have multiple Firefox Profiles which is what tomspencer was asking about. That is for separation of personal user data in Firefox from "business user data" in the same Windows user account.

  • Actually I have not failed to recognize that fact.
  • Furthermore, the fact that I was LOGGED INTO THE OTHER USER ACCOUNT...
... which is why it didn't make sense.
  • Like I had stated, for me... I was the same user. The portion of my post that you quoted starts with "...but what about"
  • Possibily mistakingly, I took the purpose of the firefox profile to make it possible to log on to one firefox account and utilize the bookmarks etc on that profile, being able to switch to another set of bookmarks on another profile as needed. For further clarification, in my situation... I was working in Affinity with multiple graphics files open. My son needed something taken care of and that login and password info was in my personal firefox profile. So I logged out of the business one and into the personal one. It then warned me that the profiles would merge. And... yes, Firefox profile 1 had been created on my iMac business user account and the other one had already been established on my iMac personal user account. IN MY CASE... I was both users... but it didn't recognize that I was on different user accounts when I tried to switch profiles.
  • Though not a common necessity... should Family Member 1 be logged onto the iMac, and Family Member 2 would like to jump in and take care of something quick without making that person log out of the user account... but needs the login and password saved on their own firefox profile... this should be possible without combining just because the same user account is logged in.
