thank you any known issues vs 32 bit?
The Windows version is not officially supported yet, but reports indicate it works fine for the most part, although without any significant performance gains over the 32-bit.
ok you guys should have a single installer and then ask which one you want installed.
THanks for the quick feedback. when will 64bit windows be official? also which is better for mac?
thanks leon
A single installer for Windows will probably arrive when the 64-bit is fully supported (time unknown). As far as I know, the only mac release is 64-bit.
thanks again for the info....much appreciated
Leon
This seems to indicate it is an official version of it On Windows a 64bit installer and MSI package are now available, see the Thunderbird for Organisations page for details
https://download.mozilla.org/?product=thunderbird-68.1.0-SSL&os=win64&lang=en-US
Am I misunderstanding it?
The link you provided is for TB 68.1 32-bit for Windows. It's 'official' in that it's offered on the TB webpage, but the release notes state that the 68 branch won't be deployed via auto update until 68.2 is released - and that could change if 68.2 is flawed.
TB 68.1 MSI package:
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.1.0/win32/
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.1.0/win64/
The link I posted it directly off of https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/all/ for the Windows 64 bit version. I know it is a different size than the one listed for 32 bit version.
If the link I posted is not correct then they need to fix it as that is what is shown.
With so many people asking for a 64 bit version, I wonder why more effort is not being put into getting one released. Seems that all computers now support 64 bit so efforts to bring TB up to date would not be wasted.
Question: does the current 64 bit version fully support Lightning? I've asked the question before a never got an answer.
Thanks.
As stated above, the 64-bit version doesn't offer any significant performance benefits, in most cases, hence the lack of urgency in getting it ready for wide release.
I haven't heard that any 64-bit user has had problems with Lightning, which is included in the basic installer, at least because of the 64-bit element.
Well, now I'm confused. Why did all the hardware manufacturers rush to get out 64 bit systems if the software publishers thought there was no performance improvement? Firefox is 64 bit as well as most other software published today. With your line of thinking, why bother? Just stick to 32 bit and we're done with it...
There's got to be a reason everyone wants to go to 64 bit software!
There has been 64-bit versions of Thunderbird for Release for Mac OSX (combined 32/64, now only 64-bit) and 64-bit Linux for a long time now since 64-bit versions were required to run on those OS's.
If Win64 Thunderbird was required in order to run Thunderbird on 64-bit Windows 7, 8 (8.1), 10 then there would have been work done to have Win64 for Releases long ago.
The 32-bit Thunderbird runs just fine thanks to WoW64 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WoW64
Mozilla (that makes the Firefox web browsers but not Thunderbird for a while now) did not have Win64 Firefox for Release until Firefox 42.0 and then officially as of 43.0 where it was listed on www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/
