I've been using Thunderbird for many years. I haven't changed anything but over the past few days it seems to randomly decide it doesn't want to send a message. When I type in the password to send, it tells me it's incorrect (it isn't) and the only way to get it to send is to restart Thunderbird, and then all works fine again.

Any ideas why it has started to do this and how I can fix it?

Thanks!

That sounds like a bad interaction with an anti virus product. Have you installed one on your mac?

I've not installed anything at all. I don't have anti virus software. It's very strange...

I will try resetting the wifi. Can a wifi issue really cause Thunderbird to not accept an email account password?

Thanks for talking this through. Very much appreciated!

Same thing for me. I have a gmail address and I've not changed anything but can't send emails anymore. I've checked all settings and they are correct. It is not wifi. Doesn't matter if I use a different wifi, it still doesn't work. When I first try to send it says Login to server smtp.googlemail.com with (my user name) failed and then gives the options of Retry, Enter new password or cancel. Retry doesn't work and entering my correct password doesn't work. It will then say sending of the message failed and could not be sent using outgoing server smtp.googlemail.com for an unknown reason. Says to verify outgoing server settings are correct and to try again. As stated, everything is correct but I cannot send any email. Receiving them is fine. Makes no sense. Any help would be appreciated!

Mine's not a gmail email address but other that, the same. It doesn't happen every time either. And mostly sends them fine if I close Thunderbird and then open it again.

If I can't figure this out soon, I'm going to have to drop Thunderbird as it's driving me crazy. How do I contact them to ask if this is something they are aware of and if they can offer suggestions on how to fix?

Beanwalls, I ended up having to delete my account/email address and re-add it. Now it works fine. It must be some glitch in their system. However, I was not able to just delete my account. It would freeze up and I wouldn't be able to do anything. So I tried adding my same email and information as a new account while the old account was still there. It let me, but then said I already had this account etc. and to try using a new email address. But it had the new account mostly added. At that point it allowed me to delete the defective email account. It then fully added my new email account, which of course was the exact same information.

To do it I went clicked on the 3 bars in the upper right hand corner and clicked on Options and then Account Settings. In the lower left hand corner is Account Actions. First see if it will let you delete your account. Like I said, it wouldn't let me so you may just want to go ahead and click on the option to Add Mail Account. Add your exact same email information. It will then say you already have an account with this information. Click on your original, defective account (should be listed first in your Account Settings) and choose Remove Account in the Account Actions drop down menu. It then removed my original account and my new account was added and now works just fine! Yay! It was driving me NUTS too!!

I'll give that a try, thanks so much!

I have one POP3 account though, and all my emails are downloaded to my computer and aren't on the server anymore. So if I delete I assume I'll lose them all. Can anyone assist on a way around that?

OR a solution to this problem that doesn't involve deleting a reinstalling my email accounts?

Thanks!

re : When I type in the password to send, it tells me it's incorrect

That is the server having a wobbly and does not like what is being sent. As AV has been ruled out..........

Try rechecking and rewriting the password. In Thunderbird

  • 'Thunderbird' > 'Preferences' > 'Security' > 'Passwords' tab
  • click on 'Saved Passwords'
  • click on 'Show Passwords'
  • Right click on the smtp:// line for the email address/account and select 'Edit Password'
  • Clear and carefully retype the password
  • click on 'Close'
  • click on 'OK'

Restart Thunderbird to ensure all files get updated.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, my password for this POP3 account isn't saved. I don't want it to be. I type it in when I open Thunderbird and it downloads my messages. And when I want to send a message I type in the password to send - but right now, for some unknown reason, it doesn't accept the password when I want to send a message. It works fine with incoming messages, but says the password is wrong with outgoing messages.

I haven't changed a thing in the settings. The password is correct and works for incoming messages. Just not outgoing. It's baffling.

And the only way to solve it is to delete the account and reinstall it.

It is definitely a glitch in their system Beanwalls, and truly does not make sense. As I mentioned I had the same problem. Used the correct password but the outgoing will not accept it no matter what. I am guessing an update has somehow messed things up for whatever reason.

I have imap and not pop3, so you are right that you will probably lose all your emails since they're not on the server. What a pain! I hope someone with Thunderbird can get it fixed for you so you don't have to delete your account and reinstall it!

re :I have imap and not pop3, so you are right that you will probably lose all your emails since they're not on the server.

When you remove a pop account via Account Settings, the account is removed from the Account Settings and Folder Pane etc, but it is not removed from the profile name folder unless you manually access the profile name folder and delete it. Creating a new pop mail account and then pointing it to use the original pop account would show all emails stored in old pop account again.

That's good news for you Beanwalls!
