I shut down Firefox last night and all was fine. I booted it up this morning and I had been logged out of all websites. This has happened once or twice in the past, but rarely. I did NOT clear the cookies, so please don't suggest that that is the issue. Any idea why this happens and how I can avoid it in the future? Thanks.

Your ‘logged-in’ status is stored in special cookies. If the cookie is removed, you are logged out.

Also, some websites will 'time out' non-active users.

Type about:preferences#privacy<enter> in the address bar. The button next to History, select Use Custom Settings.

At the bottom of the page, turn on Clear History When Firefox Closes. At the far right, press the Settings button. Turn on ONLY Cache and Form And Search History leaving the others off.

Thanks Fred but what I'm not getting is why all of a sudden the special cookies you're talking about would have been removed. Maybe I wasn't clear -- I awoke to find that I had been logged out of every single website that I'm usually automatically logged into -- maybe 20 or more sites. What could have changed between yesterday and today, and why? Thanks!

Profile data can be removed or not recorded in several ways;

  • 1) Running Firefox in Private Mode (nothing is recorded)
  • 2) Privacy settings; (In the address bar, type about:preferences#privacy<enter>)
  • 3) Many disk cleaners and anti-virus type programs can remove data from browsers. Open their settings and have them leave the browsers alone.
  • 4) Mal-ware.
