My laptop recently suffered water damage and the hard dive 'rescue' failed to save my TB data. I had saved my TB folders and messages awhile back on a portable hard drive. I copied them from the drive to my TB profile in my now factory reset laptop. When I open TB, the folders are all there but no messages. However, when you view the folders in OS(C): all the messages are there, but they will not open. All my knowledge of computers is from trial and error (lots of those!) and this is completely over my head. The laptop runs on Windows 8.1 and TB is synched with gmail. (many of the messages were from the time that gmail was Google mail) Any assistance (in words of one syllable or less) would be very much appreciated.

what is it you consider your mail. there a mozeml files, they are windows search facilitators and only contain the beginning of mail and no attachments. just enough so the windows search can do it's brain dead best to confuse. Personally I do not use windows search and have the option to create the files turned off in Thunderbird. save a huge amount of wasted disk space.

Then there are mail files. They have names like inbox and drafts. They have no file extension and are accompanied by a files of the same name with the file extension msf.

So which is it you have.

Hi Matt, Thanks for your reply.

The mail in question is stored in "Local Folders" and are displayed in OS(C): for example as:

Name Type Size Amazon File 6,308KB Amazon MSF File 162KB

As I wrote, all the files and folders in 'Local Folders' copied across and while the contents of the folders, i.e. the mail messages are in OS(C): and are labelled as 'Thunderbird Document', Thunderbird is failing to recognise them as mail and is saying that the folders contain no messages. The messages themselves are labelled with alpha numeric codes, some long, some short, such as:

9750480.40969.1375217327881.JavaMail.taxadm%40globaltax-credit-note-svc-14009.dub4.amazon.com.wdseml

and:

5356710E.4000703%40googlemail.com.wdseml

There are over 100 subfolders with my Local Folders.

Is this helpful?

Many thanks

Amazon is your mail... all the rest is rubbish, but hang onto a backup of it while you work through things. But first things first. Shut down Thunderbird Delete all the MSF files. Then restart Thunderbird

Any mail showing up.

Sorry Matt, that has made absolutely no difference. The 'Amazon' folder contains 235 messages that are just not being recognised as mail by Thunderbird.
