Why do I always get the message that Thunderbird cannot access my address book?

Whenever I open Thunderbird I get the message that my address book cannot be accessed because it is either read only or used by another application - thunderbird doesn't save my address or pre-fill addresses when I send an email to a frequently used contact

lets start with some obvious things.

From the help menu select troubleshooting information. click the show profile button.

in explorer right click the abook.mab file.and select properties Is the read only box checked?

What anti virus do you use?

Thanks Mat, it was marked as read only. I would never have known where to find that so thanks so much for your help. Is there anything else I need to do to get the "prefill" function to recall previously used addresses and to save addresses?

check all the mab files. if one is read only others may also be.

The prefill stopped working for me at one point, and it was an add-on. quote and compose manager and more functions for address book spring to mind, but it is nothing I really remember.

Hold shift while you start Thunderbird and continue in safe mode when prompted. does auto fill work in that instance? then it is an add-on that is the issue. unfortunately I have no idea what add-ons you have, or exactly which causes the issue, so just reenable them one at a time until you find which one brings the issue back.
