I attempted to forward a message and Thunderbird hung. Forced Thunderbird to close and then reopened. Now when attempting to access or delete this message, Thunderbird immediately becomes unresponsive and I must force a close. Thunderbird works correctly for everything but this one message. It appears that if this message is clicked on, Thunderbird continues the attempt to forward it and becomes unresponsive. The message originated through gMail. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this corrupted message?

Anti-virus is System Mechanic System Shield. It appears the message hung during forwarding and the laptop was closed (lid shut) prior to completion.

Before proceeding with christ1's suggestions I decided to empty all spam and trash folders and try to delete the offending e-mail message one last time. This time I was successful. Once I was able to do this the problem of Thunderbird going to "unresponsive" mode appears to have been corrected. Thanks christ1 for your efforts. I'd like to point out that Thunderbird not responding has occurred once before when the spam and trash folders had a large number of messages. I would suggest that anyone who encounters Thunderbird becoming unresponsive, try emptying the trash and spam folders then "compact" the folders.

Thanks again christ1.
