Everytime i change the home page in Tools-options then close the browser it reverts to the following URL

      http://home.tb.ask.com/index.jhtml?ptb=F378DAB4-253E-4659-8950-E3F37E47C5A3&n=782a0fea&p2=^BA5^xdm133^YYA^us&si=245051_Work-ieff

WHY? Why? Why?

Must I uninstall Mozilla Firefox and reinstall it or is there another solution?

If this problem persists i may have to review my endorsement of Mozilla Firefox as a Browser of Noteworthyness. In which case Firefox would become as Internet Explorer to me and all those with whom I communicate. I'm quite sure none of us wants that to Happen. A real shame.

Two things I suggest checking:

(1) One possible culprit for this would be an extension. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. All extensions are optional. If in doubt, disable.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and defer the restart until after part 2:

(2) Check for an optional settings file named user.js file in your profile folder (personal settings folder). Firefox uses the settings in that file at startup to override your saved preferences from the previous session. Unless you created that file yourself, it may contain unwanted settings from an add-on or external software.

Here's how: Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

By default, Windows hides the .js file extension. To work with files as accurately as possible, I suggest showing all file extensions. This Microsoft support article has the steps: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wi.../show-hide-file-name-extensions.

Then check for user.js and:

If you find it:

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename user.js to something like user-old.js.

Start Firefox back up again and hopefully you now can control your own home page.

If you don't find it:

Go ahead and restart Firefox using one of those Add-ons page links. Hopefully without the unwanted extensions, you can control your home page again.
