hello, first please make sure that the date, time & timezone are set correctly on your system. if this doesn't solve the issue (or it is already set properly), a possible solution depends on different factors:

  • what is the error code shown under technical details on the error page?

in case the error code equals sec_error_unknown_issuer, please attempt to add an exception on the bottom of the error page in order to inspect the certificate like it is shown on the screenshot attached:

  • which issuer information does the certificate contain?

please report back with those two pieces of information. thank you!

thank you Phillip for your attention to me. I'm a writer and wikipedia is very important to me. Time, etc are correct. There is no "error message"? The screen says: Secure Connection Failed. I have sent a message as requested numerous times but you the only response so far. Thanks for trying and I hope for the best.

can you do a screenshot of the error page & attach it here?

If you can't inspect the certificate via "I Understand the Risks" then try this:

Open the "Add Security Exception" window by pasting or typing this URI in the Firefox location/address bar and check the certificate:

  • chrome://pippki/content/exceptionDialog.xul

In the location field of this window type or paste the URL of the website.

  • retrieve the certificate via the "Get certificate" button
  • click the "View..." button to inspect the certificate in the Certificate Viewer

You can inspect details like the issuer and the certificate chain in the Details tab of the Certificate Viewer. Check who is the issuer of the certificate. If necessary then you can attach a screenshot that shows the certificate viewer.

Secure Connection Failed

The connection to en.wikipedia.org was interrupted while the page was loading.

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.
Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

can you check in the firefox menu ≡ > options > advanced > network > connection - settings... if firefox is set up to directly connect to the internet ('no proxy').

Firefox can't load websites but other browsers can

I followed your instruction to "settings" but what next? I see a tab that says 'Use system proxy settings', but what should i do next?

more options

i should have said that the tab saying, 'Use system proxy settings' was the only one with a check on it.

more options

try the "no proxy" option instead.

in case this didn't work, please perform all these steps:

  1. reset firefox (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
  2. afterwards go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
  3. finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the free version of malwarebytes and adwcleaner.
