Researched PIMs today and found out about THunderbird with lightening add-on. Downloaded TB and installed. After numerous attempts, web search troubleshooting and tweaking account settings in Google, still cannot get a gmail account set up. Also, first window of account set up continues to state TB can't connect to our servers; check connection.

Firewalls and anti-virus are common reasons for connection and set-up failures. Beyond this, Gmail has become more difficult to set up, with their two-factor authentication system. You usually need to choose the off-putting "lower security" setting too.

I want to say this was a two-fold problem. First, even though I had gone into my google settings to allow less secure apps, a recent Windows update not only didn't allow TB but as of this morning it didn't even allow Chrome. So I added permissions or both in Windows firewall and Chrome started working (after a reboot only). This time when I opened TB I no longer saw the message "unable to connect to servers" but creating the new account said verification failed maybe due to incorrect password. I checked email in chrome and sure enough, Chrome had disallowed TB access to my account and told me to "allow less secure programs" in my settings. (I had disabled that when Chrome wasn't working, thinking that was the problem today). Sure enough, now both chrome and TB are working. Just thought this should be posted to help any others who might have the same issue. So as of now, problem is resolved. THanks.
