How can I prevent Firefox from opening a second instance of Excel when I click on a web link to a .csv file?
I can't find anything about this online

But how do I prevent a second instance of Excel from opening. Going to the same link in Internet Explorer (which I don't care for) doesn't open a second Excel up.
Can you give the us the link of that .csv file ?? we first check more about it .
Click on any of the csv files at http://pic.dhe.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v41r1/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ibm.ismsaas.doc%2Fimport%2Fr_sample_csv_files.html . When I click on any of them a second instance of Excel opens.
The CSV files are send as Content-Type: text/comma-separated-values
Do you mean that you also see the file in a Firefox tab or do you get two Excel instances?
You can try to rename (or delete) the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all file actions.
- http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Resetting_download_actions
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

A second instance of Excel opens - so when I go into Task Manager there are two listings for Excel. I can close one of them and still have the other open
Excel 2000. I know that's ancient but it does everything I want and I'm tired of learning a new user interface because someone at Microsoft decides that everybody needs to do things their way.
Yes, I clicked one three different cvs files in the link above and I ended up with 4 instances of Excel running according to Task manager all of which had to be shut down separately.
It is possible that the links get open directly via the command line and also via DDE and thus you end up with two instances.
You can check for problems with DDE.
Unfortunately I'm using Windows 7 professional and the File Types tab isn't there anymore. I went to Start - Default Programs but all that allows me to do is select which program opens a .csv file - nothing else.
