If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop

I'm using the current version of firefox which I downloaded 10 days ago - new 2nd hand computer with a new HD (27" screen) that had been returned to factory settings. Should I just delete FF and re-load it?

Your question was posted under the Firefox OS product which is Mozilla's own mobile operating system. I have now moved this to the Firefox for Desktop product.
